Columbia University has changed classes to a mix of online and in-person until the end of the semester because there are a lot of protests happening on campus. The husband of the Vice President talked on the phone with two Jewish leaders at the school to talk about stopping hate towards Jewish people at colleges.

Even though the protests are happening very close to Columbia, Biden will not be coming to visit the campus because he has other events in New York on Friday. His team thought about it, but decided it would be too difficult because of safety concerns and other factors.

Speaker Mike Johnson, a leader in the government, visited to ask the Biden administration to protect Jewish students. He said he will talk to Biden and ask for a plan to possibly use the National Guard to help.

We need to make sure things are organized and peaceful at these schools. We can’t let this happen in other places too. We know how to do better.

Biden has been okay with the protests supporting Palestinians for a while, even though some people don’t agree with him. He knows it’s okay for people to have different opinions. But his advisers are worried about threats being made against Jewish students.

You can speak out against the war if you want, the adviser said. But it’s not okay to hurt or be mean to Jewish students.

Some important people who help the president are watching the protests happening and they think that only a few students are protesting, so most students probably don’t feel the same way.

A group of people asked younger voters what they thought about how President Biden is dealing with a situation in the Middle East. Only a small percentage of these voters liked how he is handling it, and they didn’t think it was very important compared to other things like the economy. Also, the young voters felt sorry for both the Israeli and Palestinian people in equal amounts.

But it is still difficult for Biden because he recently gave more money to Israel for their military while there are protests happening. The White House is not happy with how the Israeli Prime Minister is handling the situation with Hamas and the aid to Gaza, but it is unclear if this will change Biden’s strong support for Israel.

In February, Biden wrote a note about keeping our country safe, saying that countries who get help from the US with their military must follow the rules about how to treat people in war. The White House has to decide by May 8 if Israel is following those rules. The people in charge are still trying to figure out the answer and haven’t made a decision yet.

Biden told Netanyahu that the US might have to change how much help they give to Israel if Israel doesn’t let more help go to Gaza.

If the US thinks that Israel is not helping people and not following the rules about how to treat people fairly, the White House might do things to make it harder for Israel to get military supplies, give them less money, or put a lot of pressure on the leader of Israel. They haven’t decided yet, though.
